Hello Dear Art Lover

HOT DEAL OF THE SUMMER

It’s been a hot time in the city hasn’t it? I hope you’re able to get outta Dodge some time soon. I’ve not missed one summer in northern Ontario except for the Covid year. Of course I realize that Thunder Bay might not be on the top of your list for vacation, but different strokes for different folks! What’s not to like about clear skies, sunny days and cool nights, and the majestic views of Lake Superior. This year I get to play in the waves with Fox and Theo and Ingrie and Joanna. How much fun that will be!

This is my second last newsletter til September so I thought I’d have a SPECIAL OFFER on one of my most recent paintings. If you’ve seen my IG postings you might recall a painting that I’ve added a painted ‘frame’ to. It had been called ‘The Protector’ but it’s been changed. An IG friend sent me her take on the painting which prompted me to recall an ‘adorable grandson’ story.

Joanna and her boys lived in a 2 storey apartment. One day she heard an almighty crash coming from upstairs. A little voice calls down ‘Nothing Happening Here’ You can see where this is going can’t you?

Here’s the deal. If you’d like to see ‘Nothing Happening Here’ on your wall and order it by July 31, I am offering it at a huge discount. Instead of $2500, it will be $2000.00 You can even put it on layaway. Free delivery in the GTA. It is 36 x 36 in, acrylic, gallery wrapped. ready to hang.

FIRST COME FIRST SERVED !

Thanks so much for your interest. Enjoy the heat!

Rock on,

Gail

Hello Dear Art Lover

FEELIN HOT! HOT! HOT!

Love it or hate it…it really doesn’t matter does it? This is our summer and with all our moaning about winter you’d think we’d realize we just have to give in. Or move to …..I was going to write down Paradise (aka Thunder Bay) but then I remembered they do get minus 50 sometimes. Plus a whole lot of snow. My strategy is to slow down and sit in the AC. And visit friends who have pools (thanks Dee) Although the addition of refreshing cocktails served by attractive models would also be nice. But her building does not have that amenity. ):

During the summer months I do not partake in any outdoor art fairs. I’m focussing my efforts to get my art out there by applying to galleries for representation. If you’re visiting somewhere you think my art would be a good fit, I’d really appreciate hearing about it.

If you’ve got a road trip in mind, please visit my art in the Ahnisnabae Gallery in Thunder Bay. As I grew up there, Louise has kindly displayed my paintings in the past and now has 5 pieces in her amazing space. She has a stunning collection of indigenous art from across Canada. I have bought several painting by Linus Woods, an artist from Manitoba. I love his vibrant use of colour to tell his stories.

Louise’s gallery is at 18 S Court St. Thunder Bay.

www.ahnisnabae-art.com

Closer to home, you can visit Paris ON. There you will find some of my Head Shots series in the delightful Taren White Gallery, 13 Grand River St N, on the main street. The gallery opens onto the Grand River and Taren has lots of events happening in the gallery this season so check her website for details. I’ll be giving an artist talk in September. Date TBD.

www.tarenwhitegallery.com

Here’s this week’s education tidbit. I’ve always thought my art had a surrealistic aspect to it so reading about the Surrealists had a certain interest for me. Enjoy.

https://www.moma.org/learn/moma_learning/themes/surrealism/tapping-the-subconscious-automatism-and-dreams/

Attached you’ll see a recent painting that finally has a name. It is ‘Spirit Tree’ It started as a random pour of paint that I covered with cello. Check out some past Instagram posts where you can see the process in action.

Thanks again for reading and supporting my art adventure. I love having you along.

Rock on,

Hello Dear Art Lover

HAPPY CANADA DAY !

Are you the type to plan your summer down to the last detail or are you a ‘just go with the flow’ kind of person? When I worked full time as a radiation therapist, we had to choose our holidays a year in advance due to the structure of that job. So I got used to planning the valuable vacation time. But now that I have the summer spread out I tend to be a little more relaxed as to when and how I’ll spend the precious days of warmth.

This year I’ll be going up to PARADISE, (aka Thunder Bay) as I mentioned before, but I’ll also be able to take the darling and busy grandsons hiking the ravines in Toronto and swimming in Lake Ontario. It doesn’t take much for 2 boys to make an adventure out of anything.

It was a great trip to Paris, ON to deliver some paintings to the very welcoming and gorgeous Taren White Gallery. Tracy and I were Thelma and Louise, (without the cliff) as we found our way down to that lovely town. I’m attaching a few photos of the art that will be on the walls for the months of July, August and September. I hope you take the drive.

Hope you have time to celebrate this special day with family and friends.

Hello Dear Art Lover

SUMMERTIME and the Living is Easy

Does it seem to you that here in Canada, summer just surprises us every time. All of a sudden, it’s HOT! I know I must be getting older because I’m actually not complaining (too much) about the heat. Although as soon as I can’t see downtown clearly from my east end neighbourhood, I just want to shout “Take me out of here!!” You know I just want to head north to Paradise (AKA Thunder Bay) to the clear skies, sunshine and cooler nights. Plus swimming in Lake Superior, sauna every day and marshmallow roasts.

I love getting suggestions from my friends here who send me really interesting information about art events and artists, especially female artist. Laila sent me an article about Sahara Longe, a British female artists who is with Timothy Taylor gallery in London, UK. Check her out, she does fabulous figures.

https://www.timothytaylor.com/artists/sahara-longe/

I’m planning on putting this gallery on my itinerary for my next London trip.

It’s confirmed! Taren White Gallery in Paris, ON is featuring me as a guest artist for the months of July, August and September. I am beyond excited as she has asked for some of my Head Shots series. Her stunning gallery is at 13 Grand River St N, on the main street of that lovely town and has a deck overlooking the Grand River. It is so pretty. I can’t wait to take my paintings to her. If you are able to plan a road trip to see some of Ontario’s picturesque towns, please include Paris and pop in to say hello to Taren and my paintings. I’m sending Cyndi, Frida , Hilary and Watermelon Anyone. They are mostly named for famous female creators. I’m sure you’ll guess who Cyndi and Frida are named for, but Hilary might have you stumped. Hilary is the wonderful British writer of ‘Wolf Hall’ and ‘Bring up the Bodies’. I’ll be doing an artist talk there in September. Date TBD. Check my website in the Head Shots series.

www.gailwilliamsartist.com

Check Taren White Gallery for info about her fabulous shop.

You’ve probably noticed that I’ve been loving the fluorescent colours for a while now and recently I discovered some new ones by Holbein. Here are two recent paintings using the dramatic ‘opera’ (a vibrant pink) and violet. Enjoy. I’m not sure when they will be taken out for a viewing, but if you fall in love with them, you are welcome to visit my studio or we can arrange a home visit. I’d love to know which one you like best.

Don’t forget that I welcome layaways.

And as always, please know how much I value your support and interest in my art adventure. I’m so glad to have you along for the ride.

Rock on,

Gail

Hello Dear Art Lover

MORE LOVE IN THE PARK

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

It was such a blast to use my tent at the Rosedale Artfair as a photo booth. So many couples and some singles and menage a trois embraced beside my painting ‘The Long Embrace’ The theme of ‘It’s All About Love’ was truly celebrated and I could not have asked for a better response.

BTW, the original painting is available. It is hung using a french cleat which makes installation so easy. I thank my personal woodworker Gilbert for being so creative. I’d gladly come over to hang it in your home.

This year my ‘Walking the Dog’ series has been very popular. One person bought one for her sister who lives south of the border. Thanks Kim.

If you’d like a commission, let’s talk. Customize your dog, your accessories, your colour. A commission is $230. If you choose one that I have already done, it is $200.

Here are some highlights from the WE and a pic of a happy new collector.

Hello Dear Art Lover

LOVE IN THE PARK

Well that was fun!!

Last WE I took my solo show “It’s All About Love” to the Riverdale Artwalk. I could not have asked for a better response! A young couple visiting from Sweden started a trend of spontaneous embracing, posing with my painting ‘The Long Embrace’ I didn’t have much trouble asking for more participants. Such fun. If you’d like the opportunity to save your embracing for posterity, please come on down to the Rosedale Artfair this WE, June 10/11, in Ramsden Park, 1020 Yonge St. from11-6. My camera will be waiting for you. And you’ll get a sticker this time.

This art fair will end my 3 weekends in a row shows. But that does not mean I’ll be slowing down. I’ve been in the studio working on new art that I am quite excited about. Attached you’ll see my latest finished piece. It is provisionally titled ‘Sunset Maiden’. Please send me your thoughts.

As usual I will be spending time up north this summer in Paradise AKA Thunder Bay. Luckily my daughter Joanna and the grandsons Fox and Theo will also be in the camp next door. We’ll all be able to visit Ingrie in her new home there. We’re looking forward to the laughs, the lake and the love.

I’ve got some exciting things happening that I am bursting to announce, but I have to keep the lid on it for just a bit longer. I hope you stay tuned for a reveal very shortly.

Hello Dear Art Lover

SNEAK PEAK

We had a blast at The Art Show at Peg Graham’s last WE and quite a few of my doggies found new homes with excited owners. All of them were thrilled to be taking home some cheer with these brightly coloured fun artworks. There are a few left and if you’d like a commission, I can do that for you.

This WE, Sat/Sun June 3/4 is the Riverdale Artwalk in Jimmie Simpson park at 872 Queen St E, near Logan from 11-6. I’m taking my ‘It’s All About Love’ show to the walk this year, so if you missed my solo show here’s another chance to see it. Hello Dear Art Lover

GET THOSE SNEAKERS ON!

You guessed it! It’s time to get those running shoes on so you can keep up with me. I have 4 ..yes 4 art shows happening in the next 3 weeks as well as the art in the galleries I’ve listed below. I would be honoured to have you visit the one that is convenient for you. There is so much happening in Toronto these WE’s and of course the traffic is crazy. Personally, I like to stick to my hood on the WE’s so I really appreciate your support.

My history of art is lacking in so many areas so I love to get recommendation from my friends. Angela is a font of knowledge and sent me a new source of art history. Check out this website for fascinating information about women artists. Thanks Angela. Please send me more!

https://womensartblog.wordpress.com

I’d like to extend a personal invitation to Peg Graham’s lovely home and garden at 64A Queensbury Ave. 16 artists will have their creations in and outside her bespoke gallery. It’s always so much fun and sponsors a well deserving cause ..Insdpire ,educating Indigenous youth. Peg has curated a very talented group, so please come out to support your local artists.

The Art Show, 64A Queensbury Ave, Sat/ Sun May 27/28..11-6

As well, I will have my art at the Central Connection 30th anniversary art show at Withrow Park clubhouse. 19 local artists will display their diverse talents. I’ll have my WALKING THE DOG series there. They are 12 x 12 acrylic on canvas ,original paintings for $200. If you’d like a commission, it’s only $230…choose coat colours, dog type etc. So fun and what a great gift. Father’s Day is coming up!

If your’e in Paris don’t forget to visit Taren White Gallery, 13 Grand River St. N. My Frida is there along with a gorgeous selection of other artists. Her gallery has a deck onto the Grand River. Such a sweet location. Especially this WE..it’s their annual Butter Tart Festival, the largest collection of this iconic Canadian treat in the world. Sugar coma central! If you can’t make it, please visit her online gallery Glow Gallery. There you will find 3 more of my Head Shots series.

So…I’ll get back to polishing the sneaks and applying the sunscreen. See you somewhere!

Hello Dear Art Lover

Happy Victoria Day WE

Here we are again. Another lap around the sun as they say. Hopefully we will have sun for all the BBQ’s that are planned. Are you spending time with family, staying in the city or off to the cottage? I’ll be learning how to do gelli printing on Sat with Joanna. More fun stuff for adding collage to my mixed media pieces.

Did I mention that my recent painting “The Queen’ has found her forever home? As soon as Andrea met her, she knew she just had to have her and I am so happy that she feels the connection. I had tears of joy knowing that what I am creating resonates so deeply.

This week I did the happy dance when I was notified that I was accepted into the Rosedale Art Fair. It’s listed at the end of this email. Please mark your calendar.

This is my art in homes and available art newsletter. Hope you see something you relate to.

Don’t forget I can arrange a flexible layaway plan for you.

Hello Dear Art Lover

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

My mother was called the sweetest mother and when we had her service after she’d had 92 years here, a Hershey kiss was placed on every chair. I know that not every mother/child relationship was as blessed as mine and I am truly grateful for her gentle soul but she was not the ’ butter wouldn't melt in her mouth’ kind of mom. She loved a risqué joke as much as the next woman and had an eclectic taste in many areas including food and music. But the most endearing thing about her was her non-judgemental attitude. Miss you Mom. A lot. More every passing year.

This past week has been busy with visiting family from Thunder Bay, namely my daughter Ingrie and my sister Dianne. Ingrie just moved up there in February of this year, but she has been back here twice now doing work for her writing about beauty biz, @t.zonebeauty if you’d like to look her up. Dianne is the next sister down from me in age. We always have some great laughs together. You might recall that I am blessed with siblings, having 7 all together.

On the art business side of life here, I have pieces online and in the gallery with Taren White Gallery in Paris, ON. The show is called Celebrating Women Artists. I chose Frida for the in gallery and have several for the online including Fox, Maja and Margaret, and Amanda. The show runs May 11- 31.

Next up is Central Connection 30th anniversary show at Withrow Park community centre May 27/28, 12-5. I’m sending my Walking with Dogs paintings.

The Art Show is May 27/28 at 64A Queensbury Ave, 11-6. Because my style has changed so much, I have decided to clear out, at super duper low prices , some inventory that includes mainly landscape paintings and pass the savings on to you. Maybe you had your eye on something you’ve seen before. Come on out to this lovely artified home near Warden and Kingston Rd.

If you want to give some flowers for Mother’s Day that will last forever, visit Blossom and Tempest at 928 Kingston Rd to pick up a Pretty Little Thing., 6x6 in. wee beauties on wood panel.

On Thurs May 17, 6-8, you are invited to the 25th anniversary celebration of the Artist Network at Leslie Grove Gallery, 1158 Queen St E. Please come out to hear some stories, see artwork and share in the memorabilia of 25 years of artists supporting artists in Toronto. You may not know, but I exhibited in Jimmie Simpson park with the Riverdale Artwalk in 2005 and 2006. I vowed never to do another outdoor art fair again. My, how the times have changed!

Meanwhile, back in the studio…I’m back at it, digging for buried treasure with my unique unpatented technique of placing plastic on top of randomly applied acrylic paint, letting it dry and then pulling off the plastic to reveal an underpainting that is always surprising. If you’d like a studio visit, I’d love to introduce you to the room where it happens.

Rock on,

Gail

2023-12 Living Artfully with Gail

May 05, 2023 in 2023

Hello Dear Art Lover

What’s your addiction?

One of my addictions is reading. I’ve got to have a few books on the go all the time. I’m also very engaged in learning how to write better. When I worked at the Odette Cancer Centre in radiation therapy, I had an amazing head of department. At the Wellspring facility for cancer patients for which I qualified as I’d had colon cancer (12 years ago ), I was introduced to narrative writing with Ariella Damelin. She so inspired me that I approached Sheila, our fearless leader, to conduct a research project that included writing and art making with our radiation therapy staff. It was very successful and I actually presented it at an international conference in Helsinki. I tell you this because I believe that journalling and art making are vital to our well being.

Segue into art on your walls and reading. On my night stand today is a wonderful little book entitled ‘How Art Can Change Your Life’ by Susie Hodge. Often, when I look at art I’m not sure why I’m having certain reactions to what I’m looking at. This book is full of insights. Thanks to Angela for recommending it.

Please send me your suggestions.

Don’t forget that we can devise a payment plan to suit your budget.

If you’d like to give or receive a Mother’s Day gift that lasts longer than flowers, consider a work of art. Let me know if there is a special theme you want and I can check my inventory. Dogs..flowers..love?

Rock on,

Gail

2023-11 Living Artfully with Gail

Hello Dear Art Lover

I HAVE A BAD HABIT

Confession time…I have a bad habit and I’m trying to make some changes. Last week was the first solo show that I had ever had. It was a resounding success. The space was perfect for my art, I had a wonderful turnout and such positive feedback. I do feel proud that I was able to put it all together. So many other people helped me in a variety of ways and I appreciate and acknowledge their support.

My bad habit is that I am already planning the next shows and the next paintings. I am not giving myself time to really take it in. Do you do this? Living in the moment and slowing down to recognize the achievements along the way is a challenge for me. Thank you for your support of this adventure of mine. I truly am living my dream and am deeply grateful. On the last day of the show, Fox very proudly picked the winner of the FREE ART draw who just happened to be my neighbour Gord. Congratulations Gord!

That said..here we go again!

You are invited to 3 shows this month.

In Paris (ON) I’ll have one painting in the Taren White Gallery and three will be in her online show. This show is called ‘Celebrating Women Artists’ and will run May 10-31 at the Taren White Gallery, 13 Grand River St N, Paris, ON.

The Monday night life drawing group Central Connection, is having it’s 30th annual art show Sat/Sun May 27/28 in Withrow Park, near Danforth and Logan in the community centre at the north end of the park. My art will be there but I will not , unfortunately. This group of artists are extremely talented. You’ll be sure to find something new to add to your art collection.

Instead, I will be in attendance at The Art Show at Peg Graham’s lovely home all WE Sat/Sun May 27/28 at 64A Queensbury Ave, Scarborough. Peg’s place is near Warden and Kingston Rd. She creates a gallery with her entire home and garden and has 16 artists represented with a variety of paintings, pottery and jewelry. This show is benefiting Indspire, an initiative to educate Indigenous youth.

This week I was very pleased to be able to add to Dawn’s charming home. She’d had her eye on a painting that reminded her of her Irish roots that I named ‘I Wish I Were There With You’. It fit in perfectly with her extensive and meaningful art collection.

Something that gets me excited is hearing about dreams come true. Especially for people I know. My daughter Ingrie’s BFF from highschool, has realized his dream to see his production on stage at Harbourfront after many years of working on it. If you love Japanese Taiko drumming, please support Kokichi Kusano in his signature show ‘NAE, The Rice Seedling’, May 5,6,7 at Harbourfront Centre Theatre.

BTW, did you know that I can set up a flexible payment plan if you see some painting of mine that you love, but the timing is not right for you budget. Let’s talk.

Rock on,

Gail
