Hello Dear Art Lover

Happy Victoria Day WE

Here we are again. Another lap around the sun as they say. Hopefully we will have sun for all the BBQ’s that are planned. Are you spending time with family, staying in the city or off to the cottage? I’ll be learning how to do gelli printing on Sat with Joanna. More fun stuff for adding collage to my mixed media pieces.

Did I mention that my recent painting “The Queen’ has found her forever home? As soon as Andrea met her, she knew she just had to have her and I am so happy that she feels the connection. I had tears of joy knowing that what I am creating resonates so deeply.

This week I did the happy dance when I was notified that I was accepted into the Rosedale Art Fair. It’s listed at the end of this email. Please mark your calendar.

This is my art in homes and available art newsletter. Hope you see something you relate to.

Don’t forget I can arrange a flexible layaway plan for you.

Rock on,

Gail

Hello Dear Art Lover

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY

My mother was called the sweetest mother and when we had her service after she’d had 92 years here, a Hershey kiss was placed on every chair. I know that not every mother/child relationship was as blessed as mine and I am truly grateful for her gentle soul but she was not the ’ butter wouldn't melt in her mouth’ kind of mom. She loved a risqué joke as much as the next woman and had an eclectic taste in many areas including food and music. But the most endearing thing about her was her non-judgemental attitude. Miss you Mom. A lot. More every passing year.

This past week has been busy with visiting family from Thunder Bay, namely my daughter Ingrie and my sister Dianne. Ingrie just moved up there in February of this year, but she has been back here twice now doing work for her writing about beauty biz, @t.zonebeauty if you’d like to look her up. Dianne is the next sister down from me in age. We always have some great laughs together. You might recall that I am blessed with siblings, having 7 all together.

On the art business side of life here, I have pieces online and in the gallery with Taren White Gallery in Paris, ON. The show is called Celebrating Women Artists. I chose Frida for the in gallery and have several for the online including Fox, Maja and Margaret, and Amanda. The show runs May 11- 31.

Next up is Central Connection 30th anniversary show at Withrow Park community centre May 27/28, 12-5. I’m sending my Walking with Dogs paintings.

The Art Show is May 27/28 at 64A Queensbury Ave, 11-6. Because my style has changed so much, I have decided to clear out, at super duper low prices , some inventory that includes mainly landscape paintings and pass the savings on to you. Maybe you had your eye on something you’ve seen before. Come on out to this lovely artified home near Warden and Kingston Rd.

If you want to give some flowers for Mother’s Day that will last forever, visit Blossom and Tempest at 928 Kingston Rd to pick up a Pretty Little Thing., 6x6 in. wee beauties on wood panel.

On Thurs May 17, 6-8, you are invited to the 25th anniversary celebration of the Artist Network at Leslie Grove Gallery, 1158 Queen St E. Please come out to hear some stories, see artwork and share in the memorabilia of 25 years of artists supporting artists in Toronto. You may not know, but I exhibited in Jimmie Simpson park with the Riverdale Artwalk in 2005 and 2006. I vowed never to do another outdoor art fair again. My, how the times have changed!

Meanwhile, back in the studio…I’m back at it, digging for buried treasure with my unique unpatented technique of placing plastic on top of randomly applied acrylic paint, letting it dry and then pulling off the plastic to reveal an underpainting that is always surprising. If you’d like a studio visit, I’d love to introduce you to the room where it happens.

Rock on,

Gail

Hello Dear Art Lover

What’s your addiction?

One of my addictions is reading. I’ve got to have a few books on the go all the time. I’m also very engaged in learning how to write better. When I worked at the Odette Cancer Centre in radiation therapy, I had an amazing head of department. At the Wellspring facility for cancer patients for which I qualified as I’d had colon cancer (12 years ago ), I was introduced to narrative writing with Ariella Damelin. She so inspired me that I approached Sheila, our fearless leader, to conduct a research project that included writing and art making with our radiation therapy staff. It was very successful and I actually presented it at an international conference in Helsinki. I tell you this because I believe that journalling and art making are vital to our well being.

Segue into art on your walls and reading. On my night stand today is a wonderful little book entitled ‘How Art Can Change Your Life’ by Susie Hodge. Often, when I look at art I’m not sure why I’m having certain reactions to what I’m looking at. This book is full of insights. Thanks to Angela for recommending it.

Please send me your suggestions.

Don’t forget that we can devise a payment plan to suit your budget.

If you’d like to give or receive a Mother’s Day gift that lasts longer than flowers, consider a work of art. Let me know if there is a special theme you want and I can check my inventory. Dogs..flowers..love?

Rock on,

Gail

Hello Dear Art Lover

I HAVE A BAD HABIT

Confession time…I have a bad habit and I’m trying to make some changes. Last week was the first solo show that I had ever had. It was a resounding success. The space was perfect for my art, I had a wonderful turnout and such positive feedback. I do feel proud that I was able to put it all together. So many other people helped me in a variety of ways and I appreciate and acknowledge their support.

My bad habit is that I am already planning the next shows and the next paintings. I am not giving myself time to really take it in. Do you do this? Living in the moment and slowing down to recognize the achievements along the way is a challenge for me. Thank you for your support of this adventure of mine. I truly am living my dream and am deeply grateful. On the last day of the show, Fox very proudly picked the winner of the FREE ART draw who just happened to be my neighbour Gord. Congratulations Gord!

That said..here we go again!

You are invited to 3 shows this month.

In Paris (ON) I’ll have one painting in the Taren White Gallery and three will be in her online show. This show is called ‘Celebrating Women Artists’ and will run May 10-31 at the Taren White Gallery, 13 Grand River St N, Paris, ON.

https://tarenwhitegallery.com

The Monday night life drawing group Central Connection, is having it’s 30th annual art show Sat/Sun May 27/28 in Withrow Park, near Danforth and Logan in the community centre at the north end of the park. My art will be there but I will not , unfortunately. This group of artists are extremely talented. You’ll be sure to find something new to add to your art collection.

Instead, I will be in attendance at The Art Show at Peg Graham’s lovely home all WE Sat/Sun May 27/28 at 64A Queensbury Ave, Scarborough. Peg’s place is near Warden and Kingston Rd. She creates a gallery with her entire home and garden and has 16 artists represented with a variety of paintings, pottery and jewelry. This show is benefiting Indspire, an initiative to educate Indigenous youth.

This week I was very pleased to be able to add to Dawn’s charming home. She’d had her eye on a painting that reminded her of her Irish roots that I named ‘I Wish I Were There With You’. It fit in perfectly with her extensive and meaningful art collection.

Something that gets me excited is hearing about dreams come true. Especially for people I know. My daughter Ingrie’s BFF from highschool, has realized his dream to see his production on stage at Harbourfront after many years of working on it. If you love Japanese Taiko drumming, please support Kokichi Kusano in his signature show ‘NAE, The Rice Seedling’, May 5,6,7 at Harbourfront Centre Theatre.

BTW, did you know that I can set up a flexible payment plan if you see some painting of mine that you love, but the timing is not right for you budget. Let’s talk.

Rock on,

Gail

Hello Dear Art Lover

LOVE IS ALL AROUND!

Here is a wee reminder just a day or two early that you are invited to my first solo art show, ‘It’s All About Love’ at 1558 Queen St E on until Sat April 22. Thursday and Friday I’m there 3-9pm and Sat hours are 11-5.

The reviews are incredible and I owe much of it to my friend Tracy who generously curated the show so well. “It feels good in here” is the common sentiment that many people have expressed. There have been miles of smiles and some tears of joy as friends, new and old, have gazed at the art work. I couldn’t have asked for a better response.

My bright colourful art brings life and love to this former architectural office. It is the perfect blend of industrial concrete, warm wood and funky lighting.

Come on down and share some stories of love and perhaps find that masterpiece you’ve been looking for.

I’m attaching a photo of ‘The Queen’ who will soon be reigning in her new home.

PS..payment plans are available.

Hello Dear Art Lover

IT’S PARTY TIME

It’s almost like the night before Christmas, I’m so excited. My first solo show ‘It’s All About Love’ is ready for you. There are many new paintings as well as some previous work but it really is all about love. The love of stories and colour.

I had not intended to create a series or even a show around the theme of love. It grew organically in much the same way my actual paintings seem to develop. You will very likely recognize the influence of Klimt in my work, which is more than just the subconscious guiding me.

Creating this series has reminded me that I have always loved drawing the figure, creating patterns and working with colour. I also love the discovery of finding familiar shapes where others do not. And I love to recreate my otherworldly dream landscapes of human and animal characters.

It is no accident that there is always a story behind my paintings. I invite you to stand where I stood when I painted them and find your own stories.

Here again are the details . The address is 1558 Queen St E, just west of Coxwell Ave. The opening reception is Sun April 16,1-5. Thereafter I will be open, April18 &19, 1-4, April 20 &21, 3-9, and Sat April 22, 11-5.

I look forward to sharing stories of love with you.

Hello Dear Art Lover

IT’S ALL ABOUT LOVE

Can you tell I’m just a little excited about my upcoming solo show, ‘It’s All About Love’? Despite having lists and lists of tasks to do, I think I’m on track. Almost all the paintings are done and I have a wall dedicated to previous work that hasn’t been able to be shown for a while. I hope you’ll like what you see. If you have any favourites that you’d like a closer look at, just let me know.

You may remember from a previous newsletter that my inspiration for my upcoming solo show that runs April 16-22 was a painting titled ‘Love You Forever’. The name is an homage to my Mom and Dad who raised 8 children in a little three-bedroom house. In a family journal kept at our lakeside camp, my Dad wrote a few lines about how Mom was his perfect partner. He died when he was 57, and she passed when she was 92. In a twist of fate, she did not discover this love note til years after his passing. A testament to the power of love that can ring through a few simple lines, I tear up every time I read it.

I look forward to seeing you at the show and sharing stories of love.

The address is 1558 Queen St E, just west of Coxwell on the north side of the street. It’s a one story dull green building. But looks are deceiving…it’ll be a jewel box inside. Lots of cheerful, bright masterpieces inside.

Plenty of street parking. Refreshments at the opening party and on the last day.

Hello Dear Art Lover

FRIDAY ART DAY SALE

Here’s a few more of my paintings from a few years ago that no longer reflect my current style. The prices are drastically reduced and I can deliver with no charge in the GTA. The top one is a love letter to Ireland. I adore the greens of their landscape.

The second painting was inspired by hot air ballooning over France. No, I didn’t go up, except in my imagination.

Thanks to Marguerite for adding my art to her collection. These minis were super fun to do. They are acrylic on paper with copper, attached to wood panel. I might have a few left.

Hello Dear Art Lover

SPRING HAS SPRUNG !

THE GRASS HAS RIZ..I WONDER WHERE THE BIRDIES IS!

Did you have the goofy uncle who always thought we’d laugh? Never the less it is a very joyous time of year. Especially after our very dark winter. Apparently the darkest in decades. Which means we may go a little overboard with kookiness. Or is that just me?

Here at Living Artfully with Gail, I’m in the midst of getting ready for my first solo show. The space I’ve rented has the perfect vibe for me. It’s a little industrial mixed with a friendly atmosphere of natural wood and tons of light. It’s right on Queen St E, near the lake and close to the Beaches neighbourhood I love. There will be a mix of a lot of new paintings plus a selection of a few older pieces that deserve to have an outing. Please plan on visiting ‘It’s All About Love’, April 16-22, at 1588 Queen St E. (just west of Coxwell). The opening is Sun April 16, 1pm-5pm. Refreshments and fun to be had.

Did you know that you can visit almost any museum in the world with a virtual tour? I love hearing the docents speak about the paintings in art galleries. The last time I was in London, I was as mesmerized by the children listening to the guide as I was with her explanation. Here’s a link to the Tate. You can look up so many masterpieces it’s almost like being there in person.

Would you be interested in taking a gelli print workshop? My friend Gerry, the illustrious printmaker, will hold a small class soon. I have a list of people who are interested. Let me know if you want to be added. It’s a fun way to create prints and papers for collage.

This is the last WE that my two paintings, The Wallflower and A Gathering of Friends will be shown at the Elaine Fleck Fine Art Gallery, 1351 Queen St W. We had a wonderful audience for the opening. It was a privilege to be included in this prestigious gallery. If you’d like to meet me there before it ends, I’d love to share my stories with you.

Just in time for spring and Easter and Mother’s Day, I have some of my Pretty Little Things mini florals in the best store in my hood. They are small 6x6in beauties on wood panel, done in acrylic with a glossy finish. Kat has them on a shelves, but they can also be hung on the wall. If your’e looking for a bright little something for yourself or a friend, visit Blossom and Tempest at 928 Kingston Rd, between Victoria Park and Main St. Kat has curated a wonderful selection of giftware and clothing in a charming boho atmosphere. I’m changing things up over here at Living Artfully with Gail.

Going forward, one week, I’ll be sending you a few photos of available art and the alternate week will be a more info-filled communication.

This week, I’m offering reduced prices on some older work. I don’t have a lot of room for storage and my work has changed considerably over the recent past. I’d much rather have my art in a happy home than sitting in storage.

Here are two paintings that I still love and am proud of. I’m also including a photo of one of my paintings in a client’s home.

Hello Dear Art Lover

MEA CULPA!! MEA CULPA!!

I accept full responsibility for that crazy thundersnow storm we had on the WE. I was remembering the old days of building snowmen and snow forts. Of course I could actually get up from the ground easily back then. Now what I’m thinking when I see all that white stuff, is where I am going to find a parking spot. :)

Hope you hunkered down and sat by the fire with cookies and hot chocolate (or a favourite cocktail..my personal choice)

Last Thursday there was an opening reception for the Fleck Fine Art Exhibition for March. The room was buzzing with energy and I was fortunate to talk about my two paintings that are there, The Wallflower and A Gathering of Friends. Several other artists spoke eloquently of their work. It was quite wonderful. I hope you can visit the show. The address is 1351 Queen St West, east of Jameson, in the heart of Parkdale.

One of the things I’m interested in, is the making of gelli prints for use in the addition of collage papers in my paintings. I am persuading my friend Gerry to hold a workshop and think there might be a few people here who might also be interested. Here’s a link to what gelli printing is about. Please send me a message and I’ll start a list.

You can use gelli prints for making cards but I am also thinking it would be a great activity with grandchildren.

Several years ago my buddy Dorothy and I saw the jaw-dropping gorgeous work of a Ghanian artist who uses discarded found treasures in his creations. Imagine in the ROM, floor to ceiling, ‘tapestries’ made with bottle caps. It quite literally had us gaping at the beauty.

Here’s a link to the wonderful art of Ghanian artist El Anatsui.

You can see more of my art at the Leslie Grove Gallery right now in their ‘Valued’ show highlighting the work of some of the many volunteers of the Artist Network. This show runs March 1-19. The gallery is located at 1158 Queen St E at Jones. You’ll find ‘Motherlove 1’ and ‘Can We Come Out Yet?’ among other great art of the volunteers.

I’m really in the thick of getting ready for my first solo show called ‘It’s All About Love”,which happens April 16-22. The venue will be at 1558 Queen St E (just west of Coxwell). You’ll find how I’ve channelled my inner Klimt. The inspiration for the title and the theme was started with a painting I’ve called ‘Love You Forever’ which I attach here. Teaser alert…there’s a very sweet back story to this one. Please mark your calendars for the opening on Sunday April 16. It’s going to be a PARTY!!

Rock on,

Gail
