2023-02 Living Artfully with Gail

February 21, 2023 in 2023

Hello Dear Art Lover

It’s been a minute

Hope you’ve been well..enjoying the no- snow winter. To be honest I would love to have some but I know I’d probably get a few dirty looks.

It’s been a little busy over here at Living Artfully with Gail. My studio has moved to another location at Warden and Danforth Rd about 12 mins east of where I live. It’s smaller unfortunately but the time had come to move out. I’m now sharing space with 3 other artists who were also at Labatt. It does have a bonus of a loading dock door we can open to the weather, so that’s a good thing. I’ve already been painting in the sunshine, despite the calendar.

We also were helping our oldest daughter with her move to Thunder Bay. She had a mountain of boxes to take with her. Although I will miss hanging out with her I’m hopeful it will be an exciting adventure for her and her partner. She has lots of cousins, aunts and uncles to help her out. Already I’ve seen her skiing and enjoying the sunny north.

On the art scene here, I have so much news to share with you. I’m booked til July with art shows, both indoor and outdoor.

First up is a dream come true! Elaine Fleck has accepted 2 of my paintings for her March group show. The opening reception is Thursday March 2, 7-9pm, at the Elaine Fleck Gallery, 1351 Queen St. West. I would be delighted to have you join me that evening. However, if another time would suit you, I could arrange to meet you there. The show is on for the month of March. I’m quite excited to be showing in this prestigious gallery.

When Ingrie moved to Thunder Bay, she took 5 paintings with her to be shown at Louise Thomas’ wonderful Indigenous Ahnisnabae Art Gallery at 18 Court St in Thunder Bay. Louise has graciously allowed a former resident of Thunder Bay the opportunity to have my art in her gallery in the past. Quite a few of my paintings have found homes in my home town. If your’e planning a cross Canada road trip, please drop in. Louise has curated an amazing collection of indigenous art and several pieces have found their way onto my walls.

In April, I am holding my first solo show. I found the perfect space at Studio1558, on Queen St East near Coxwell. The show will be called ‘It’s All About Love’ and will run from April 16-22. There will be a party happening on April 16. I’ll be sending out the invites so please keep your peepers open.

I won’t bore you with the details of my busyness just now, but please keep in mind that every month there will be an opportunity to see my new work. And you know you’ll always get a hug.

You may know that I don’t have a degree in art, but I love learning the history and trying to keep up with the contemporary art scene. I am very lucky to have friends like Angela, who send me articles. One of the types of art I like is graffiti and in another life, I would be a Graffiti Grandma, but it’s past my bedtime. I hope you enjoy this article that Angela sent me not long ago.

Your eagle eyes may have detected that I’m using another platform to deliver my newsletter. Another reason why I’ve been a little tardy. It should be no surprise to you that I have a certain frustration level in learning new computer skills. I’m surprised my head is still attached.

The Long Embrace is finally signed and ready for the April show. I attach it here for your enjoyment.

Rock on,

Gail

Hello Dear Art Lover

And in this corner!!!

Happy New Year and as we Finns say Onnellista Uutta Vuotta...if you say it correctly you win a prize. (lol)

I hope you have at least had a chance to take a breath between all the parties, the weather and the fun stuff you get up to. You can imagine the chaos that happens at my house with 2 gandsons and all those sisters of mine. It's always a free for all.

This year has started off with a bang for me. Or should I say a bell ringing. I am saying goodbye to Labatt Studio and hello to Studio Mack. I'll be sharing an industrial unit with 3 other wonderful artists, Nancy, Penny and Rod. My space will be smaller and we won't have that amazing atrium ceiling we had at Labatt, but the price is right, the location is good and there is parking. It's at Warden and Danforth Rd, only 15 mins east from my house.

You might have seen some of my very large paintings on canvas if you've kept up with the Instagram. I was taking advantage of the wall space at Labatt, but I will still be able to do the same size in my new place. I'm feeling like something is shifting in my practise and  I'm not sure what it is, but it is going to be great. The air is humming and something good is coming. (my  sister , Ellen,  has inserted the music from West Side Story into my ear). Our mom was a member of the record of the month club and every month we had a new favourite to learn. Imagine a small house with 6 dancing maidens singing their hearts out! Fun..Fun..Fun.

So far, and it's only mid Jan, I have FOUR events booked. I am super excited about the March group show  that is with a prestigious west end gallery. Details to follow.

I'm also pleased to announce my  first solo show at a new event space here in the east end. I've booked it for my birthday week in April. Again, details will be coming soon.

Third, my painting 'The Tall Trees are Listening' was juried into the Artist Network's Hello Yellow show that runs from Jan 18 to Feb 5. It's at Lesliegrove Gallery, 1158 Queen St E at Jones. I hope you'll be able to visit the wonderful bright paintings that are sure to add some warmth to this cold and dreary January.

Another artist whose work I adore, Felicity Somerset, also has a photograph in the show. I'm attaching her photograph as well as a photo of one of my paintings that she got a while ago, plus my current painting. I think there might be a theme here (lol)
Check out Felicity's stunning work. Her work is copywrighted, so please admire it's beauty here or at the show and buy it from her.

https://www.felicitysomersetphotography.com/about

And...if your'e in Thunder Bay this year, I'll have several paintings in the Ahnisnabae Art Gallery owned by Louise Thomas. I am so grateful to Louise for having some of my work in her gallery. She has an amazing collection of indigenous and local artists. I'll let you know when it will be on the walls.

 http://www.ahnisnabae-art.com/contact-us.html

In anticipation of these shows, I have decided NOT  to have a sale yet. However, if you had your eye on a particular painting and want to get it or put it on hold, we can discuss. I will be giving myself a raise..IOW (in other words) a price increase is coming. Let me know soon if that interests you.

If your'e interested in more art news than I could possilby ever know, check out
https://www.theartnewspaper.com/2022/08/12/canada-artists-resale-rights-royalties

There's so much there that I couldn't choose which story to share. Happy reading.

Rock on,

Gail

Hello Dear Art Lover

Merry Christmas to All and to all a Good Night

And just like that, here we are again. At the end of another year and the beginning of another. How blessed I am to be here at this time with a loving family, a wonderful gang of friends and an army of passionate lovers of my creative endeavours.  I never forget that I would not be where I am without such enthusiastic support.

And that is what I wish for you. To go after your dreams, no matter where you're starting from, no matter what your resources are. To never give up and to be true to your unique self.

It's been very busy this last quarter of the year and next year it looks like things will be continuing in the same direction.  Labatt Studios will be moving. I hope you'll continue to come along for the ride.

In anticipation of moving, I'm planning anextraordinary sale. Stay tuned for the weekly announcements. You might be able to snag that original Gail Williams painting you've had your eye on for a sweetheart of a deal.

Throughout this past year, I have suggested several authors and resources that you might have found interesting. I know that art lovers almost always love reading as well as visual art. You may have noticed that I am passionate about paying attention to what intrigues you and that we are all artists in some way. Not necessarily on the canvas.

Here are five authors  that have attracted my attention this year. They are all amazing (in my opinion) and deserve to be explored.

Rob Walker..The Art of Noticing. He has a book and newsletter.

Hello Dear Art Lover

My Heart is Full

Thank you so much for your support of my art career. This past WE we had the fifth annual Gifts for the Soul holiday market and it was a roaring success. That is because you have been such a super booster for me and my small business. You've bought my paintings, come out to my shows and brought friends and have told others about me. I wouldn't have been able to continue so confidently if I hadn't had your support.

This month I have one more art event and it's going to be wonderful!  My friend Karen, a talented potter and very active community member, has organized a mini art crawl in our neighbourhood. There are 3 stops on the tour. Karen's place will host herself and her dad the famous Fred Franzen and body care by Sarah Ann Goldnau-Vogt, fine art and tea towels by Sunny Mills, and textiles and jewellery by Tali Tjiang. Her address is 3 Wembley Drive. You'll find fabulous ceramics at Noel Yardley's place as well as work by Thomas Bollamnn. 416 Gainsborough Rd. At Lisa Herrara's gallery she will be joined by the talents ofJoanne Filetti, Scott Danielsand myself. Please visit us at Tangerine Dream Art Studio and Gallery, 8 Eastwood Rd.

These 3 places are within a few blocks of each other near Coxwell and Gerrard. Free street parking. Easy access by TTC.

FREE ART DRAW
CHARITY GIVEAWAYS

You may now view the complete Small Works I have just added to my website. It's the 'Love You Forever' series, original acrylics on paper, 11 x 14 in, matted and ready to frame. FREE SHIPPING in Canada in time for holiday giving. This series was prompted by a love letter my Dad wrote to my Mom that was not discovered until years after he'd written it. A kind of 'Time Goes By' story if you know that BBC show with Jean and Lionel (Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer) The price for matted paintings is $300. I can add a frame for $20.00. Of course, you might recognize my homage to Klimt. I just can't help myself loving that man.

If you like Klimt, you may also want to check out another one of my favourites Friedensreich Hundertwasser. He has quite the story. An artist, architect, environmentalist.

Friedensreich Hundertwasser - Wikipedia

Who are you art loves?  Please let me know.

And now once again, I am asking for HELP. We have been given our final ..no more extensions.. get out of Dodge, notice at our studios at 7 Labatt Ave. If you have any leads on where a group of artists can find affordable space, please let me know. Our last day there would be March 31, 2023.  We have been very fortunate in having this location for as long as we have. I think there'll be a party happening in the new year. So stay tuned.

If you live in east end Toronto, you may have seen the article about me in the Beach Metro news. But, I have more press too!! If you'd like check out my interview in the online magazine Canvas Rebel.

Here's the link:
https://canvasrebel.com/meet-gail-williams/

One of the questions I answer is about not starting this art career til later in life and that really made me contemplate my path. Perhaps you've regretted some choices you made in the past that you now see differently. That certainly is true for me. Years of looking at X-rays and scans have informed my art practise in ways I never would have guessed. ThanksLailafor pointing out the obvious.

You'll find attached some images of my Walking the Dog series. I've decided I will do  commissions. The DEADLINE to have your painting ready for Christmas is Dec 18... The perfect gift for the dog lovers who have everything else but a personalized painting of their fur baby. Only $230. for one, or 2 for $399.

Thanks so much for your support. I wouldn't be here without you.

Rock on,

Gail

Hello my friend

Sneak Peek

Were you the kid who just couldn't wait for Christmas and hunted through the house looking to find your parents' hiding spot? Well...that's me and I had 7 brothers and sisters to help. We were always giddy with excitement. It makes sense that I can't wait to share with you my newest small works, Love You Forever, before it's released to the general public on Sat. Nov. 26.

Every winter, I create a special series of small works at a special price for my community of friends to either start or add to their collection. It's a way to say THANKYOU for your support throughout the year.

This collection is inspired by my recent large painting, Love You Forever. You read that story in last week's newsletter. (The newsletters are archived on my website should you want to refresh your memory) If you've been watching me for a while, you might guess that I love the work of Klimt. It followed naturally that I would create a series all about love, shamelessly borrowing from his genius.

These original acrylics are painted on archival W/C paper, 11in x 14in, matted and ready to frame. For you, the special price is $270.00, available Nov 22-25, after which theprice increasesto $300.00. FREE SHIPPING in Canada. DM for international rates.
One was sold before it was even finished, so make your choice NOW.

The name of each little painting appears as text on the image, but it is not on the painting itself. I hope you like these delightful artworks as much as I liked making them.

Again, I thank you so much for your love and support.

LOVE YOU FOREVER

Gail

PS.. you can put your order aside with a quick etransfer..(just sayin)

Hello Dear Art Lover

START THE CAR!!!

Isn't this weather just a little crazy?! I know you don't want me to say it, but...just a little tiny bit of snow wouldn't be that bad would it? Just enough to get everyone in the mood for the holidays. But before I go ahead and get all excited about what is coming up for the Christmas season, I really must take a pause to show respect on Remembrance Day. Even with all our political noise, I think we're very fortunate to live in this country. My dad was one of those young men who lied about their age to join the navy in WW2. Him and his best buddy, also named Bill, were on convoy duty accompanying bigger ships across the Atlantic. Thanks Bills.

My Grandma bought a camp (cottage to the southerners here) on Lake Superior in the 1930's. Imagine a drafty cabin, no electricity, no indoor plumbing. Anyways..it's been the scene of many a good time for almost a century. We have a 'camp' book, a guest book, that has been filled down through the years, with notes of appreciation from friends and relatives, drawings from grandkids and stories of crazy antics. We're a large family so we do have quite a few tales.

When my Mom was the owner, my Dad wrote a romantic letter to her about his adoration . My Dad died when he was 57, my Mom at 92. She didn't discover that love note until many years afterwards. My Dad, ever the trickster, put it near the end of the book. I've read that book many times and it always makes me tear up.

When I finished the painting you see here, it just had to be called 'Love You Forever'. And when I was deciding on what would be the focus of this year's ' Small Works', I knew it had to be my 'Love You Forever' series.

SAVE THE DATE ... SMALL WORKS
ADVANCE RELEASE TO VIPs … that's YOU

This year's Small Works will be open to you, my VIPs, at thespecial discountprice of $270 startingNov 22 - Nov 25. On Nov 26, the price goes up to $300 when they are available to the general public. I'll be posting photos so you can choose. I'll only have 9 and one has sold already. Here's a teaser to let you in on what to expect.

You could get your 'Love You Forever' original painting at our Gifts for the Soul holiday market on Nov 26, 9:30 - 4 pm, 450 Broadview Ave, (north of Gerrard St E). If you order ahead the price is $270. They are 11x 14, acrylic on paper, matted in a standard size, ready for framing.

Perhaps you'll see something else that you just have to have. There will be a fantastic choice of pottery, paintings, jewellery, wearable art, fibre art, notebooks and boxes made from recycled materials, and glassware. I can't wait to see what our creative team is bringing to the table. And of course, the weather will be perfect

You know I love to get letters from you! Steve sent this fun story a few weeks ago. It's a wild world out there folks.

Hello Dear Art Lover

JINGLE

There's a whole lot of shaking of jingle bells happening in my house these days. It's like when you have a dinner party and you do all the prep that you can do ahead of time, and it still looks like a disaster zone almost as soon after the first guests appear. I really didn't think I'd have that many art events for the holiday season, but I think accepted too many party invitations. Oh well...girls just wanna have fu-un.

Having said that...I hope that you'll be able to join in the merriment that I'm organizing. What's a party without the people?

I'm not sure if you remember the first Gifts for the Soul holiday market that we held almost 7 years ago. It was at Artscape on Shaw St in the west end. This year is our 5th annual celebration (factor in the Covid years). We are lucky to hold it in the historic St . Matthews Club house, 450 Broadview Ave, just north of Gerrard St E, in Riverdale park. It is the perfect cozy spot for our boutique. There will be some new vendors showing their unique work. Paintings of course, vintage and embroidered jewellery, elegant pottery, stunning fibre art, charming decorative birdhouses, painted glass ware, and the always charming creations by Janet from found objects..notebooks, boxes, hedgehogs. Come say 'Hi' to Dorothy, Joanna, Lorrie, Janet, Tracy, Deniz, Barb and Janet.

Check their IGs to get excited. @dorothyabarrett, @caveandcrownfibreart, @lorriekingpottery, @janetfpotterartist, @tracydaviesart, @denizinmushroomland, @barbielew

Please save Sat Nov 26, 9:30 -4pm for the only shopping experience you'll need. We'll have something special for everyone on your list.

As well, I am participating in a mini holiday art crawl here in my east end neighbourhood with about a dozen other very talented folks. Pottery, ceramics and fine art will be featured. Please mark your calendar for Dec 9-11. I'll be part of the Karen Franzen and Friends Holiday Market. Details to follow.

And is if that isn't enough, I'm working on a new series I'm calling 'Love You Forever' inspired by my latest full size painting. The details of how this story unfolded will be next issue's focus. You will have first access to this delightful new body of work at a special VIP price.

Added to this newsletter are some of my 'Walking the Dog' series. I had such fun with these and haven't had too many place to show them off. They are 12 x 12 in original acrylic on canvas and only $200. When the new owner buys the painting, I add the title 'Walkies with....' (fill in with your choice) on the back. I can change the colour of the dog if you'd like. They make perfect gifts. Especially for those hard to buy for people who have 'everything'. This is a limited series and when they're gone, they're gone. If you need 2, you get a discount. 2 for $350.00 Your'e welcome!

PS..Did you notice the new logo? Thanks again for your support. It means the world to me.

Rock on,

Gail

Hello Dear Art Lover

Did You Guess?

Did you stuff yourself with food and family love last WE? I truly hope you did. I am very grateful for being able to surround myself with the joy of family. Even though it does get a little noisy, and there is always some drama, for us it's good drama. The most noise coming from Theo, as his brother Fox, accidentally (of course) gave him a small black eye during the wrestling match. Don't all little boys do that?

The outdoor art fairs are over for this year, but the art making continues. I'm working on aspecial project of new work in time for holiday gifting that I'm basing on my recently completed large painting called 'Love You Forever'. It's a very sweet story that I'll share soon. I hope to capture the beauty of the sentiment in a way that you will like.

Our annual holiday market 'Gifts for the Soul' that was derailed for 2 years is back again. This year it will be at the historic St. Matthew's Clubhouse on Broadview Ave, north of Gerrard on Sat Nov 26. We have some new vendors whose work is very unique. I'm sure you'll find a few things that will be just perfect for that special someone.

You might be wondering if I've changed my style. Surprise!!! This fabulous painting is by the talented artist Kit Cutting who bought one of my paintings a few years ago. It's almost life sized , 4ft.x 5ft.. 'Schooner' looks like he could reach right out and give you a kiss, doesn't he? Kit says he's not for sale, but I bet if you looked at her website, you might find something there that you just have to have.

Kit has a website with 10 other artists in Port Stanley (online). Her web part is https://portsidegallery.ca/product-category/artists/kit-cutting/

I love to see what creative endeavours are happening with my tribe. Send me some photos and ideas please.

Included today is the current W!P (work in progress) that my nephew Bill and I are engaged in. This time, he's at the helm. We are very simpatico and it still surprises me that we work so well together. Is weirdness in our DNA perhaps?

If I haven't told you lately...I love you...thanks for your continuing support.

Rock on,

Gail

Are you always as surprised as I am when, just overnight, it's time to get out the sweaters and gloves? It does happen every year, but I'm never ready. So I brave the new colder weather while still wearing sandals. I'll bet you do too. If I had to choose my favourite season it would be fall. I mean...look at all that orange! It's not a chance thing that orange has always been my number one choice.

Here's my story. My Grandma was an immigrant from Finland almost 100 years ago. She came over on a boat with 2 young daughters to meet her husband in Northern Ontario. She had a life filled with heartache and hardship but still managed to build a life in the freedom of Canada. One thing you may not know about Finns is that we are very clean. (We invented the sauna) She liked to repaint often. I was her chosen helper. She'd buy unopened bargain bin cans of paint..colour unseen. One year the colour was ORANGE. Everything was painted ORANGE that year. From the wood box, to the rocking chair, to the stairs in her house. It's been my favourite ever since.

Back to the art...a few weeks ago I was in the fabulous Artwalk in the Square outdoor art fair. The weather was perfect and the crowds were so enthusiastic . I had many insightful conversations with new art lovers and was so appreciative thatDouglas, Shelli, Evelyn, Rob and family, Amanda, Gabriela , and Linsay, among others, who came out to see the new work I have been creating. Also , I couldn't have done it without the help of my personal peach (AKA Ron Williams) my BFF Dorothy and my wonderful daughter Ingrie. Congratulations to Janie. She was the winner of my free print draw of the WE. It was lovely to connect with her. I think she might just be as zany as me.

I love it when I receive art news from you. Angela has a great fondness for many creatives, but one she loves is the Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara. You might recognize his iconic character of a little girl who at first appearance is quite sweet and then you see her devilish sparkle. I can certainly relate to her vibe. You may think I'm sweet but most would tell you I'm definitely not. YOSHITOMO NARA The Works

I'd love to hear who your favourite artist is and why.

In my studio I am creating some really big canvases..about 5 ft x 6 ft. while I still have these walls. The canvas is tacked onto the wall and I'm just going for it. My objective is 'Go big or go home' while we still have this space. End of Jan 2023 is the new end of lease date. Email for a studio visit please.

I attach some photos of my new large canvas, 5x6 ft. called 'Love You Forever'. It's got a great story behind it which didn't evolve until after the painting was finished.

As ever, I thank you so much for your attention and support.

Rock on,

Gail

Hello Dear Art Lover

Play Ball!!!!

Hope you are enjoying this cooler weather as much as I am. When I sent out the previous newsletter, I confess I was not the gal you've come to know as enthusiastic and energetic. Both my knees were giving me grief. I apologize for maybe being a little cranky. Now I can truly sympathize with anyone who suffers from chronic pain. However, I am on the mend and can happily say that I can see the light at the end of this tunnel.

It was so nice to see so many smiling faces last WE at the art show at PegGraham's lovely home. We already have started on plans for next year. Several of my Walking the Dog paintings found new homes. If you would like a commission, I'd be happy to discuss a personal one just for you or a friend.

This WE is going to be an exciting time at theArtwalk in the Squareat shops at Don Mills, 1090 Don Mills Rd. Over 100 talented artists Friday to Sunday are ready to greet you with a variety of art. The weather promises to cooperate, so please come out to support local art. My booth number is 31, very close to last year's location. I've been working on some new pieces of course...so many ideas, so little time.

You may know that I love the northern landscape. I don't have a lot of landscapes in my work, but last year I was so inspired by the rugged shores of Lake Superior at Ney's Provincial Park that I started a diptych (2 paintings end to end). It has taken a whole year to complete but I think I have the essence of what I was feeling from those ancient stones. Have you ever had the urge to lay right on the rocks to absorb their energy? That is what I did that day last August. Communing with prehistoric spirits. It was one of those sacred moments.

I'm attaching the photos of Neys 1 and Neys 2, but you really have to see them in the flesh to appreciate their essence. I do hope you can come to visit them this WE.

Please let me know what adventures you've had this summer. It's been ages and I'm looking forward to connecting with you soon.

Rock on,

Gail

Hello Dear Art Lover

Were you one of the Cool Kids?

At this time of year, I always think of those days just before the new school year starts. I remember the excitement of a new beginning and the hope that this year would be different. So I'll make a confession right here that I was not one of the cool kids. School was a minefield and looking back, I can see that I was trying to fly under the radar. But secretly wanting to be noticed. Hanging out in the art room, that place where the cool kids wouldn't be caught dead, was a haven. It became the place where I did stand out.

How about you? Were you one of the cool kids? Did you hide out in the middle zone hoping to be ignored, not called upon in class, not exposing your lack or abundance of knowledge, just trying to get along?

Things have changed of course and now I'm out there exhibiting my eccentric curiosity, my particular outlook on life with my art and rejoicing when someone gets my viewpoint, my angle on the connections of our humanity.

Unfortunately summer fun is over, but I have a great line up to start this new fall season.
There are 2 art shows you can come to see in Sept. The first is in the welcoming home of Peg Graham. She turns her home into an art gallery fundraiser with a variety of artists and artisans. It's a two day event and always a fun time. I hope you can make it. She's near Kingston Rd and Warden. The dates are Sat Sept 10 and Sun Sept 11, 11am to 6 pm. I've attached the flyer.

Next up is the second Artist Network outdoor show for me this year at the Shops at Don Mills, Lawrence and Don Mills. Over 100 artists will be showcasing their unique styles. I will have some new works in this show. Please pray for sunshine. www.artwalk.square for more details. Fri, Sept 16,3-8pm, Sat, Sept 17, 10-7pm, Sun, Sept 18, 11-5pm.

SPOILER ALERT....GIFTS FOR THE SOULis returning on Sat Nov 26, so please mark your calendar now for this popular event.

To start the new year off, the WINNER of this month's free print is Marianna. Congratulations. I'll be sending you an email to request your address.

This summer, I had the privilege of sharing my love of the great north with my grandsons as they discovered swimming in Lake Superior, hunting for amethyst, and fishing. (Fox caught his first fish this year)
And sauna too, of course. I hope your summer had some once in a lifetime experiences too.

I hope you noticed my new name for this newsletter.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support. It means a lot.

Rock on,

Gail
