2024-04 Living Artfully with Gail

February 25, 2024 in 2024

Hello Dear Art Lover

5-4-3-2-1- BLAST OFF

We’re almost ready for BLAST OFF with the Jackalope Art Gallery.

The grand opening is Sat Mar 16, 5-9 pm at 1558 Queen St E. Just west of Coxwell in the distinctive ‘green house’ at the corner of Ashdale and Queen. The electricians have done their work and besides a little touching up with paint, we’re in pretty good shape.

Now the hard part of setting up the show starts. Our deadline for submissions is midnight on Mar 2 and we will have notified everyone by Mar 3 even if we have to stay up all night. We already have some awesome artists to show off and I think it will be pretty hard to make some decisions. But I guarantee you a wonderful celebration of local, national and international artists.

If you have any queries you can always ask.

On a personal note, I had my knee replacement last week at Michael Garron Hospital and have started the physio at Bridgepoint. I have nothing but good things to say about each facility from my doctor, Dr. Chang, all the way to porter Kirk who gave me a running commentary from the surgery to my room. I am already going up and down the stairs. After all, I do have a gala to be ready for. (lol) If you know of anyone who might be looking at a knee replacement, I would highly recommend the GLAD prehabilitaion program.

I’ll leave you with a few photos of the new space. I can’t wait to hang my new art there.

Rock on,

Gail

Hello Dear Art Lover

The beat goes on..and on and on

As you might guess, most of my time these days is getting The Jackalope Contemporary Art Gallery up and running and not much time is left for art making. Although I did manage to spend a few hours with Fox and Theo painting last WE. Theo was teaching me how to draw Dogman and Catkid. Theo has actually created more than 20 adventures with drawings and words. He was very good at showing me how to create Dogman.

I’ve often mentioned how much I need the help of friends and family. I am thrilled at how beautiful my newly renovated website looks. It is all down to my lovely niece Lise. Please take a look. The current gallery is up to date. And soon, I’ll be offering prints on paper and canvas and will have special deals on select artworks. I hope you’ll like this addition.

www.gailwilliamsartist.com

Please follow @thejackalopegallery on IG. It would be much appreciated if you would tell all your friends.

Our website is very close to completion and I must admit it’s pretty gorgeous. Of course Tracy and her talented daughter Caily were the builders. I just go along for the ride.

The Jackalope gala opening will be Sat March 16, 5pm- 9pm. It’s going to be a blast. I can hardly wait to welcome you.

On Feb 15, I’m getting a new knee so I’ll be whizzing around with a walker on opening night, although it might be challenging to navigate the masses. (lol)

Thanks ever so for your continues support. It means the world to me.

Rock on,

Gail

Hello Dear Art Lover

At Laaassstt!!

Finally I get to let you in on the most excellent exciting project that I have been privileged to launch.

WE’RE OPENING A GALLERY!!!

Yes you can believe your eyes. Right here in the east end of Toronto, a 5 minute drive from my home, on Queen St.

Two years ago I had the good fortune to meet a dynamic young woman, Tracy, a talented artist and former gallery owner. We have so much in common that it’s a little freaky sometimes. Please check out her awesome artwork.

www.tracydaviesart.ca

@tracydaviesart

We signed the lease Feb 1 and have this absolutely beautiful light filled space. It’s a mixed vibe of industrial and elegance. Huge windows and a funky atmosphere where all the artists we’ll attract will feel at home. A new place for visitors and art lovers to view up and coming and established contemporary and modern artists. We have a grand vision and can’t wait to send out the invitations to our opening gala in mid March.

What’s is called? you say? Introducing The Jackalope Contemporary Art Gallery. We chose this name because the jackalope fits our attitude. It’s memorable, unusual and a little quirky…just like us.

The Jackalope is a mythical North American hybrid animal, part jack rabbit and part antelope. They are stealthy, refined and can sing. Their weakness is whisky (no surprise) The Jackalope is a symbol of good fortune and prosperity. Please save March 16 for our debut.

The address is 1558 Queen St E, just west of Coxwell Ave. We hope you will visit often and enjoy the wonderful treasures that we plan on displaying or attend one of the events we will host.

Rock on,

Gail

Hello Dear Art Lover

Something’s Coming

Best wishes for a wonderfully happy and healthy 2024. Hope you were partying all night long. I was joining you in spirit even if I did hit the hay before midnight.

Have you guessed that I’m up to something? ‘Something’s coming, I don’t know what it is but it is going to be great. ‘Well, I actually do know what it is but I can’t let the cat out of the bag just yet. Do you know which song I’m thinking about? The first correct answer WINS AN ART CARD!

In the past I’ve mentioned Austin Kleon’s delightful books ‘Steal Like anArtist’ and so on. I love his newsletter and while I’m not as prolific as he is in his reading and music listening, I do find quite a bit of gold in his missives. A while ago he mentioned a wonderful book, ‘Drawing for Illustration’ by Martin Salisbury. I highly recommend it if you are at all interested in illustration and drawing. This week he highlights the work of Lynda Barry and Alison Bechdel, two artists who use the graphic novel so marvellously. If you go to Austin’s newsletter of Jan 19, you can find a link to a podcast you might find interesting. You’ll need to send him an email to subscribe.

Austin Kleon<austinkleon@substack.com>

I recently met another amazing artist, a fellow Finnish Canadian, MinnaKoistinen who is a glass blower. She has built a significant career over several decades and very kindly allowed me to visit her studio. She holds workshops where you can create a masterpiece in just one visit. Her studio is conveniently located in mid Toronto and you can buy her work at Petroff Gallery.

https://playingwithfire.ca.

https://www.petroffgallery.com

Besides having something exciting in the near future, I was accepted to show my artwork in the Focus Gallery that is part of the Melt Studio in Prince Edward County in October of this year. It’s going to be a busy busy time and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Til next time, be warm and cozy. Thanks so much for reading and supporting me all last year.

Hello Dear Art Lover and dog lover (I’m sure)

Such fun!!

Have you ever been a dog stalker? When I was doing my ‘Walking the Dog’ series, I would take photos of people walking their dogs. I felt like I was in a spy movie. If necessary I would ask the pet’s owner for permission. This collection has proven to be very popular. This year I’ve created cards and prints with these images and I do have a few original 12 x 12’s left. I also do commissions and could have them ready for your gift giving.

If you’d like to share your appreciation of the weird and wonderful mind of Gail Williams via her art, I have just the thing. Framed prints for only $65.00 or 2 for $120.00. Below you will find a few photos of some of my most admired paintings in print form. Please excuse the background of 2 of the images here. I think I need another tutorial on how to remove the background :)

Check my website and if you see something there and wonder if I have a print of it, just ask.

Don’t forget that I have my ‘Magnificent Women’ 2024 calendar available too. The pages can be cut out and framed if that suits you. What a bargain! 12 images for $25.00.

I look forward to greeting you this WE at the Karen Franzen and Friends holiday show at 3 Wembley Dr, on Fri, 6-9, or Sat and Sun 10-5. You can have some Christmas cheer in her studio under the trees and the chance to win free art. At this show, you’ll find Karen’s wonderful ceramics, Margaret’s cozy knitted and felted accessories, Lisa’s stunning silver jewellery, Sunny’s adorable home decor and my original paintings, as well as cards and prints.

Hello Dear Art Lover

Get ‘em while they’re HOT!

It might be winter, but it’s HOT HOT HOT here in the studio. I am so excited to share with you my very first 2024 calendar which is titled ‘Magnificent Women’. It features a detail of larger paintings for each month that could be framed. I tried to connect the figure with a significant date for each month. For example, in September you’ll find my ‘Homage to the Red Dress’ in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and in May, of course, my ‘Motherlove’. Order now for holiday giving.

Last WE it was our 6th annual Gifts for the Soul holiday market and it was a wonderful show with many beautiful creations from our participants. Our FREE DRAW was won by Anne who mentioned that she never wins anything. She was overwhelmed with all the treasures in the bag. It was indeed a pleasure to meet so many people who have made our show the one they have to attend and to meet new friends. Many commented on the high quality of the arts we had, not your average craft fair. This really pleased me to hear as that is what we had envisioned when we started out 6 years ago.

Thanks to all the visitors. We are blessed indeed that you chose us.

Coming up I am honoured to be part of a holiday market that is celebrating it’s 21st year in operation. Karen Franzen and Friends holiday show is happening Fri. Dec 8, 6-9pm, and Sat and Sun Dec 9 & 10, 10-5 at 3 Wembley Drive. (Coxwell/Gerrard area) At this show you will find original house decor, stunning jewellery, joyful functional ceramics, cozy hand knit and felted accessories and original colourful paintings, cards and prints. All items are of high quality by talented artists. Check out the artists IG posts .

Hello Dear Art Lover

Here Comes Santa Claus…

Have you been a good little art lover this year? I certainly hope so because the sacks at Gifts for the Soul are overflowing with lots and lots of enticing prezzies for you. All the elves have been polishing the jewellery, adding sparkles, and dreaming up all sorts of beautiful objects.

This year I have a bumper crop of gorgeous art cards, framed prints (under $75) and my 2024 calendar of Magnificent Women. As well I have some giclees (prints on canvas). The colour reproduction is quite amazing. You can hardly tell the difference from the original. The prices for these giclees are considerably less than the original. I invite you to visit my website and consider a giclee as I can order almost any original in a print.

Next week I will be doing more work on my website to make it easy for you to see which painting you’d like in a print. The service is quick too, so you should be able to get what you want before the holidays. The pricing will be right there for you to see. For now, I’ve created a list of sizes and prices below.

12 x 12 , original $250 , giclee $150

20 x 20, original, $600, giclee $275

12 x 18 , giclee $225

16 x 20 , giclee $330

24 x 30 , original, $1500, giclee $495

24 x 36 , original, $1800, giclee $595

30 x 40 ,original, $2500, giclee $825

Again I invite you to join us on Sat Nov 25, 9:30-4pm, at St Matthews Clubhouse, 450 Broadview Ave for THE holiday market of the season, GIFTS FOR THS SOUL. We have 9 very talented artists who have been creating wonderful offerings for the 6th annual show.

Here’s how you can support your local art scene.

Come to art shows.

Buy art for your home.

Bring your friends and family.

Commission bespoke original art.

November 16, 2023 in 2023

Hello Dear Art Lover

It’s beginning to look a lot like….

Holiday Greetings are in the air

It’s been super busy here at Santa’s workshop while I create cards and prints and the grey cells have been in overdrive learning how to do all sorts of things involving the computer. I used to have a mantra ‘I embrace my inner techie’ in an effort to come to peace with learning new computer programs but it does end in tears sometimes.

How the heck did I ever operate a linear accelerator?! My poor co-workers were often challenged with my little hissy fits. Honest!

Who knew that having computer skills would help my artistic career? I’m very excited to share with you my first calendar for 2024. I’ll be checking the sample tomorrow and hopefully have it ready for the Gifts for the Soul holiday market next Sat, Nov 25.

There will be a wonderful selection of small prints and cards all ready for you at budget friendly prices though. Hopefully you will agree that the colours are spot on and the prices are excellent. If you haven’t begun your Gail Williams collection, now is the time to start.

I took a few pics of some cards and a framed print to give you an idea of some of the images I’ll have available. There will also be some giclees and original paintings for you to enjoy. I can order prints for almost any of my paintings. Of course the prices are much less than an original but still gorgeous.

We are so looking forward to sharing our talents with you at St Matthews Clubhouse, 450 Broadview Ave on Sat Nov 25, 9:30-4pm. Please tell all your friends and bring a few BFFs with you.

Thanks for supporting your local artists.

Rock on,

Gail

Hello Dear Art Lover

Gratitude is a Gift for the Soul

Not a lot of chat today. But definitely a whole lot of GRATITUDE.

It’s because of you and people like you who appreciate my art that I do what I do. Last week, I was invited to lunch with one of my SUPER collectors, Andrea. She spoiled me with homemade pasta and French pastry and lots of delightful conversation. Her last purchase from me was ‘The Queen’ which she has renamed ‘My Queen’. As soon as she saw it at my solo show in April, she felt a deep connection that swelled my heart with gratitude. As you can see she has made quite a collection of my art and graciously allowed me to photograph her lovely home with my art in place. I am honoured that so many people are drawn to my work. It is very humbling to know that my art resonates with so many.

Here is the invite to our 6th annual GIFTS FOR THE SOUL holiday market. It’s thanks to a former colleague where I worked that I started organizing this event. We have assembled a wonderful group of talented artists who create unique one of a kind items. There’s something for everyone on your list. SAT NOV 25, 9-4:30, 450 Broadview Ave.

If you’re looking to add to your Gail Williams collection or to find a wee gift for a friend I have created new cards and framed prints at a friendly price point. They look amazing, even if I say so myself. I’ll have some prints of your previously admired original paintings.

See you soon,

Rock on,

Gail

She has such a beautiful space right on the main street that backs onto the Grand River. If you haven’t been to Paris yet, plan a visit for Nov 17 WE. It’s their stupendous shopping event. So much going on.

tarenwhitegallery.com

This year I am preparing prints all framed and ready to hang on the wall as well as more cards. I’m also hoping to get a 2024 calendar ready for you with a different painting for each month starring a series of MAGNIFICENT WOMEN. Something new for me will be a selection of embellished giclees. Giclees are prints on canvas. I’ve chosen a company that uses top quality inks , canvas and paper.

Did you know that I have had several ‘15’ minutes of fame? The first time was when I was 2 years old patting a cow at the local fair that started my love affair with cows. The next time was when I was 9 years old and won our local paper’s Christmas colour contest. Even back then I loved bright colours. I used to stay inside the lines then but as you know that’s gone out the window. I’m encouraging Fox and Theo to deliberately go outside the lines…I’m a devil that way.

Just in case you’re interested in life drawing, I thought I’d mention that I am part of the Central Connection life drawing on Monday nights at the community centre at Withrow park. Three hours with a live model, mostly nude but some costumed. There is no instruction. You can join for the year for $60.00 and pay a drop in fee of $10.00 or just drop in for $20.00. It really is a bargain and with a great group of friendly artists. Call me for more details.
